The Altered Image

Photography is a unique form of visual language based upon a specific technical grammar (lighting, shutter speed, aperture, framing, focus) that incorporates both subject and content into the final form. By extending and augmenting the parameters of this grammar, an intersection with other visual arts such as drawing and painting takes place. Photography has a long history of these interrelationships, such as the use of optical cameras and imaging instruments as aids for drawing, painting and sculpting that dates back to the Renaissance. This course provides students with an expanded framework to inform their photography by including elements of painting, collage, set design/lighting, and assemblage. Students will have the experience of traditional darkroom printing which will include experimental approaches to image-making such as print distressing, cliché-verre (hand made painterly negatives), and photo-montaged paper negatives and positives. Analog and digital cameras, smart phones and toy cameras can be used. Students are encouraged to incorporate their own darkroom images with work produced in digital environments such as on an iPhone or iPad. In addition, techniques such as collage (with original and found images), image painting and colouring, as well as mark making are covered. Course projects will be supplemented with examples of historical and contemporary artists who work with altered photographic images.
